Physician Associates
A PA is a clinician who, while not a doctor, works to a medical model, with the attitudes, skills, and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the medical team under defined levels of supervision. PAs can take medical histories, perform examinations and procedures, and formulate treatment plans. They cannot prescribe medication or request CT scans or X-rays. A PA, like all junior clinicians, will be under the supervision of a named GP. PAs have been working in the UK since 2003, and are well established internationally. PAs work across the NHS within both primary and secondary care.
Nurses
Advanced nurse practitioners and nurse prescribers can assess and prescribe medication if required.
All nurses offer face to face and telephone consultations where appropriate. They are all appropriately trained in all aspects of the care they provide.
You can make an appointment to see them during surgery hours. When you book your appointment, you will be asked what the appointment is for - this is merely so that we can allocate the correct length of appointment and to allow the nurse to prepare their consulting room for your procedure and also to ensure that you are given an appointment with the correct nurse as they each have different areas of speciality.
